8th Workshop on Ontology Design and Patterns - WOP2017
* <font color=red>Submission deadline extended to July 28th!</font>

This is the eight edition in a series of workshops addressing the topic of ontology and semantic web patterns as best practices, related to the ontologydesignpatterns.org initiative.

The Workshop on Ontology Design and Patterns targets topics relating to high quality ontology design. The workshop series addresses topics centered around quality in ontology design as well as ontology design patterns (ODP) in Semantic Web data and ontology engineering. ODPs have seen a sharp rise in attention in the past few years, both pertaining to this workshop series and other related events. Patterns can benefit knowledge engineers and Semantic Web developers with a direct link to requirements, reuse, guidance, and better communication. They need to be shared by a community in order to provide a common language, hence the aim of this workshop is twofold: 1) providing an arena for discussing patterns, pattern-based ontologies, systems, datasets, etc., and 2) broadening the pattern community by developing its own 'discourse' for discussing and describing relevant problems and their solutions. Related to the latter aim we see that it is an opportune time to open up the workshop to other approaches focusing on high quality ontology design, e.g. other methods and tools, with the intention to cross-fertilise these with the ODP idea.

For more background on the workshop series, see the main page.

WOP2017 is planned to be a full-day workshop consisting of three parts: paper presentations, pattern presentations and posters, and an interactive pattern writing and/or discussion session. The poster session will feature pattern posters, i.e. presentations of patterns submitted according the call for patterns.

__TOC__

Venue and dates
The eight edition of WOP will be held in conjunction with ISWC 2017 in Vienna, Austria on 21st or 22nd of October 2017.

Social Dinner
Information about a social dinner will be announced at the workshop.

Program
TBA

Call for Papers - Topics
Submission of research papers (including position papers) is via the WOP 2017 EasyChair page. Detailed submission instructions can be found on the WOP 2017 submission page.

The main aim of the workshop is to discuss and collect solutions to recurrent problems that matter to researchers and practitioners of the Semantic Web field, and that impact on design and engineering of ontologies, linked data, knowledge extraction, and other semantic web applications. We invite the submission of original research results related to the focus areas of the workshop. Research papers (maximum 15 pages LNCS style) should present mature work and document established results. Short papers (maximum 5 pages LNCS style) may present proposed research directions, novel ideas, or more general positions or discussions.

This year we particularly welcome contributions considering how one can develop high-quality ontologies in general, with or without the help of ODPs. Nevertheless, as usual we also welcome
pattern descriptions of all sorts, including patterns geared towards applications in specific domains,
such as geosciences, biomedical science, as well as digital humanities. The following shows main
topics of interest:

* Ontology design patterns, analyses of ODP use, and analyses of pattern-based ontologies
* Correspondence patterns for ontology matching and integration
* Knowledge patterns and knowledge reengineering based on patterns
* Antipatterns and their relations to ODPs
* Methods and tools for developing high-quality ontologies, including ontology engineering by domain experts *new*
* Analyses of quality attributes in ontologies and ontology engineering, and quality assurance approaches for ontology engineering *new*
* Pattern-based ontology design and knowledge engineering
* Pattern-based methods and methodologies for development of semantic applications
* Ontology pattern extraction
* Pattern-based information extraction, ontology learning, and relation to NLP
* Pattern-based ontology evaluation and selection
* Patterns and Linked data (usage, emerging patterns, pattern-driven data publishing, etc.)
* Quality assurance for Linked Data vocabularies *new*
* Patterns for streaming data and evolving knowledge, as well as processes and services
* Data mining patterns and Semantic Web design
* Web semantics from a pattern perspective
* Reasoning with, or using, patterns
* Patterns in semantic social networks, semantic wikis, semantic blogs, as well as in related fields such as business intelligence and conceptual modelling
* ODPs development and use in specific domains including geosciences, life sciences, digital humanities, cultural heritage, e-history, etc.

Call for Patterns
Submissions should be made via the WOP 2017 Easy Chair page. Detailed instructions for submitting your pattern can be found at the WOP 2017 submission page.

We invite the submission of research results in the form of ontology design patterns (ODPs).
Patterns submitted should have a general relevance to the ontology engineering field, or specific interest within a knowledge domain. Patterns should solve some particular modelling problem, and be of significant interest for discussion at the workshop. Patterns should be original, in the sense that they are the intellectual product of the author(s), however they may still be based on the collective experience of a community.

Pattern submissions for the pattern session will be collected:

* through the ODP portal and
* by submitting a description of the pattern (pattern description) via EasyChair.

Detailed instructions for patterns submission, including how to submit via the ontologydesignpatterns.org portal, are found at the submission page. Note that an account in the ODP portal is needed for submitting patterns; thus, authors should take care to request an account at least one week before their intended submission.

Pattern submissions can be made in any type of ODPs. Currently, portal templates for submission are provided for the following types of patterns (see general typology for explanation of the types):

* Content patterns
* Structural patterns: logical and architecture patterns.
* Correspondence patterns: re-engineering and alignment patterns.

For other types of patterns, the author is welcome to submit only a pattern description.

Submission and Important Dates
Submissions should be made via the WOP 2017 Easy Chair page. Submissions should be in the Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) format. [ftp://ftp.springer.de/pub/tex/latex/llncs/latex2e/llncs2e.zip Latex] and [ftp://ftp.springer.de/pub/tex/latex/llncs/word/splnproc1703.zip Word] templates are available. Detailed submission requirements can be found on the WOP 2017 submission page.

Best Poster Award
The best poster award for WOP 2017 is awarded based on voting by the workshop chairs (excluding those workshop chairs who themselves authored or co-authored a poster). The best poster award takes into account criteria such as the quality of the submission, the relevance and significance of patterns or pattern usages presented, the presentation of the poster during the session, and the level of involvement of the author during the revision phase and poster session discussions during the workshop.

8th Workshop on Ontology Design and Patterns - WOP2017

Submission instruction for research papers (including position papers) can be found at the submission page.

Research papers (maximum 15 pages LNCS style) should present mature work and document established results, or be short papers presenting proposed research directions, novel ideas, or more general positions or discussions (maximum 5 pages LNCS style).

This year we particularly welcome contributions considering how one can develop high-quality
ontologies in general, with or without the help of ODPs.

* Ontology pattern extraction

Submission instruction can be found at the submission page.

* Content patterns
* Structural patterns: logical and architecture patterns.
* Correspondence patterns: re-engineering and alignment patterns.

For other types of patterns, the author is welcome to submit only a pattern description.

Submission and Important Dates
For details on how to submit to WOP2017 see the submission page.

Call for Patterns
Submission instruction can be found at the submission page.

* Content patterns
* Structural patterns: logical and architecture patterns.
* Correspondence patterns: re-engineering and alignment patterns.

For other types of patterns, the author is welcome to submit only a pattern description.

8th Workshop on Ontology Design and Patterns - WOP2017

They need to be shared by a community in order to provide a common language, hence the aim of this workshop is twofold: 1) providing an arena for discussing patterns, pattern-based ontologies, systems, datasets, etc., and 2) broadening the pattern community by developing its own ``discourse for discussing and describing relevant problems and their solutions.

Call for Papers - Topics
Submission instruction for research papers (including position papers) can be found at the submission page.

Research papers (maximum 15 pages LNCS style) should present mature work and document established results, or be short papers presenting proposed research directions, novel ideas, or more general positions or discussions (maximum 5 pages LNCS style).

Original research papers and short papers are invited to consider the following (non exhaustive) list of topics:

* Ontology pattern extraction

Submission instruction can be found at the submission page.

* Content patterns
* Structural patterns: logical and architecture patterns.
* Correspondence patterns: re-engineering and alignment patterns.

For other types of patterns, the author is welcome to submit only a pattern description.

Submission and Important Dates
For details on how to submit to WOP2017 see the submission page.

Important dates
* Abstract submission (required): July 18th, 2017
* Submission date: July 21st, 2017

Call for Papers - Topics
Submission instruction for research papers (including position papers) can be found at the submission page.

* Ontology design patterns, analyses of ODP use, and analyses of pattern-based ontologies
 * Correspondence patterns for ontology matching and integration
 * Antipatterns and their relations to ODPs
 * Methods and tools for developing high-quality ontologies, including ontology engineering by domain experts *new*
* Analyses of quality attributes in ontologies and ontology engineering, and quality assurance approaches for ontology engineering *new*
 * Pattern-based ontology design and knowledge engineering
 * Pattern-based methods and methodologies for development of semantic applications

Submission instruction can be found at the submission page.

* Content patterns
* Structural patterns: logical and architecture patterns.
* Correspondence patterns: re-engineering and alignment patterns.

For other types of patterns, the author is welcome to submit only a pattern description.

Submission and Important Dates
For details on how to submit to WOP2017 see the submission page.

Welcome to the workshop series on Ontology Patterns. For more information on the individual workshops, see links at the bottom of the page.

__TOC__

Workshop Focus and Relevance
As interest in the Semantic Web increases and technologies for realizing the semantic web become more mature, the need for high-quality and reusable semantic web ontologies increases. To address the quality and reusability issues, different types of Ontology Design Patterns (ODPs) have emerged. Patterns can supply ontology designers with several kinds of benefits, including a direct link to requirements, reuse, guidance, and better communication. ODPs are well on their way to providing those benefits. ODPs have been proposed by the W3C and are currently being collected in various repositories, such as the catalogue maintained by the University of Manchester and the ODP portal at ontologydesignpatterns.org. However, pattern catalogues are still small and do not cover all types of patterns and all domains. Semantic Web applications could also benefit from additional types of patterns, such as knowledge patterns and specialized software patterns for semantic applications. In addition, to achieve communication benefits, patterns need to be shared by a community in order to provide a common language for discussing and understanding modeling problems. These workshops can leverage the activities conducted in the ontologydesignpatterns.org initiative, and aims to use the portal as their main means of communication, e.g. for pattern submission, reviewing and discussions outside the workshop schedule.

Reuse has been an important research subject in ontology engineering for many years, and this is also true for the semantic web community. Patterns are an approach to knowledge reuse that has proved feasible and very profitable in many other areas such as software engineering and data modeling. During the past few years, patterns for semantic web ontologies and ontology-based applications have been introduced, e.g. a complete session of ISWC2011 was devoted to ontologies and patterns. An earlier workshop, Ontology Patterns for the Semantic Web , was arranged at ISWC2005, however at that time the community was considerably smaller. The focus then was on discussing reusable OWL and RDF ontologies addressing general open problems. The WOP series broadens this scope to include all patterns related to ontology design and knowledge engineering for the Semantic Web. This is in line with the successful EKAW2008 conference (with the sub-title Knowledge Patterns). Topics of this conference included ontology engineering patterns but also patterns for re-engineering of knowledge resources, process knowledge, social and cognitive aspects of semantics. The first workshop was held in conjunction with ISWC 2009, a second edition at ISWC 2010, a third edition at ISWC2012, a fourth edition at ISWC2013, and a fifth edition is to be held at ISWC2014 in Riva del Garda (see links below).
Organisation
For details of the ODPA mission and organisation, see the . The ODPA was formed in 2016.

The ODPA is run by a board, consisting of regular board members, a managing committee, and a set of executive members. In addition to the board, the association has a set of regular members, mainly former board members and WOP chairs. Most activities of the ODPA, such as the WOP workshop, mailing list etc. are open to anyone, regardless if they are members of the ODPA or not. Only at the yearly meeting, where the board is elected, is it required to be a member in order to be eligible for voting - although the meeting as such will be open to anyone.

The latest yearly meeting took place on February 23rd 2017, 7pm CET. Minutes of this meeting can be found .
An event in this pattern is represented in the form of either a Manifestation or a Complex Event, where a manifestation represents the occurance of a specific situation of an object which can be directly captured from sensor data ("the tv is switched on"), whereas a complex event is defined based on its precoditions that can involve different events (e.g., "watching tv" happens when "the tv is switched on" and "someone is sitting on the couch").
The concept of Network is modeled in this pattern as a System (http://purl.oclc.org/NET/ssnx/ssn#System) whose constituents are NodeStations (subclass of Node which is in turn subsumed by the class http://purl.oclc.org/NET/ssnx/ssn#Device). Another subsumee of the Device class is the class Node describing more details about the content of each node station. Depending on their roles, nodes of a network are devided into types of node senders (whcih observe a phenomenon and send the data) and receivers (which receive the observation data).

Association for Ontology Design & Patterns (ODPA)
Welcome to the main page of the Association for Ontology Design & Patterns (ODPA). The ODPA’s goals are to promote high-quality ontology design and engineering, with a focus on methods and tools arising out of ontology design patterns. In particular, the ODPA
#	runs an annual workshop on ontology design and patterns (WOP),
#	maintains the ontologydesignpatterns.org portal (this site),
#	runs a public mailing list related to ontology design and patterns (a Google group), and
#	engages in additional activities to promote ontology design & patterns, including the provision of dissemination materials, educational activities, and engagement with researchers and practitioners.

WOP - workshop series
For an overview see the WOP main page, or go directly to the individual WOP instances:
*WOP 2015
*WOP 2014
*WOP 2013
*WOP 2010
* WOP 2009

Managing committee

For details of the ODPA mission and organisation, see the current ODPA charter.

Workshop on Ontology and Semantic Web Patterns (6th edition) - WOP2015
This is the sixth edition in a series of workshops addressing the topic of ontology and semantic web patterns as best practices, related to the ontologydesignpatterns.org initiative.

This workshop is a gatherig point for the ontology design pattern community for semantic web and linked data. As interest in the Semantic Web increases and technologies for realizing the Semantic Web become more mature, the need for high-quality and reusable Semantic Web ontologies increases as well. To address the quality and reusability issues, different types of Ontology Design Patterns (ODPs) have emerged, and methods for devising or discovering new ones from heterogeneous knowledge sources are needed.

Patterns need to be shared by a community in order to provide a common language, and to stimulate pattern usage and development. Hence, the aim of this workshop is twofold
* providing an arena for proposing and discussing good practices, patterns, pattern-based ontologies, systems etc., and
* broadening the pattern community that is developing its own “language” for discussing and describing relevant problems and their solutions.
For more background on the workshop series, see the main page.

WOP2015 will be a full-day workshop consisting of two parts: paper presentations and posters. The poster session will feature pattern posters, i.e. presentations of patterns submitted according the call for patterns.

__TOC__

Venue and dates
The sixth edition of WOP will be held as a full-day workshop on 11th October 2015, in conjunction with ISWC 2015.

Social Dinner
Social dinner will be at the Bethlehem Brew Works at 19:00. We do not have a table booked (they do not take reservations), but this should not be a busy night according to the restaurant. For those who want to walk from the Sands, we meet in the lobby and walk at 18:30. == Program ==

Keynote speaker
Krzysztof Janowicz, University of California, Santa Barbara

Title: Ontology Engineering: A View from the Trenches

Abstract: Starting from an experience report on developing ontologies and ontology design patterns for a variety of domains and purposes, this talk will reflect on the complex relationship between Linked Data, cyberinfrastructure, and ontologies. I will discuss the role of modularization and patterns for ontology engineering, technical and social challenges in the adoption of the developed ontologies, and common misunderstandings about interoperability and semantic heterogeneity. Based on this overview, I will outline three new perspectives and argue how they can address some of the outlined challenges.

Bio: Krzysztof Janowicz is an Associate Professor for Geographic Information Science and Geoinformatics at the University of California, Santa Barbara, USA. He is the program chair of UCSB's Cognitive Science Program, one of two Editors-in-Chief of the Semantic Web journal, and a Faculty Research Affiliate of the Center for Information Technology and Society. Finally, he is running the STKO Lab which investigates the role of space and time for knowledge organization.
Call for Papers - Topics
Submission instruction for research papers (including position papers) can be found at the submission page.

Research papers (maximum 12 pages LNCS style) should present mature work and document established results, or be short papers presenting proposed research directions and novel ideas (maximum 4 pages LNCS style).

This year we particularly welcome contributions of patterns concerning Linked Data, as well as
patterns geared towards applications in specific domains, such as geosciences, biomedical sciences,
as well as digital humanities.

Original research papers and short papers are invited to consider the following (non exhaustive) list of topics:

Call for Patterns
Submission instruction can be found at the submission page.

We invite the submission of research results in the form of ontology design patterns (ODPs).
Patterns submitted should have a general relevance to the ontology engineering field, or specific interest within a knowledge domain. Patterns should solve some particular modeling problem, and be of significant interest for discussion at the workshop.

* Content patterns
* Structural patterns: logical and architecture patterns.
* Correspondence patterns: re-engineering and alignment patterns.

For other types of patterns, the author is welcome to submit only a pattern description.

Submission and Important Dates
For details on how to submit to WOP2015 see the submission page.

Important dates
* Abstract submission (required): July 1, 2015
* Submission date: July 7, 2015 (extended!)
* Author notifications: July 30, 2015
* Camera-ready papers: to be determined
* Workshops will be held on to be determined

Best Poster Award
Workshop participants will be able to vote for the best poster, final decision to be made by the chairs. The best poster award takes into account criteria such as the quality of the submission, the relevance and significance of patterns or pattern usages presented, the presentation of the poster during the "lightning talks", and the level of involvement of the author during the revision phase and poster session discussions during the workshop.

Proceedings
Accepted research papers and pattern descriptions were published online as CEUR-Workshop Proceedings, and are available from http://ceur-ws.org/Vol-1461/.
